Big Stuffy Head Nov 13, 2024

The 2024/25 UEFA Champions League season will undergo significant changes, introducing the Swiss round robin system and expanding the number of participating teams from 32 to 36. These 36 teams will be divided into four levels, each level containing 9 teams.

Under this new competition system, each team will play 4 home games and 4 away games against 8 other teams of different levels, for a total of 8 league matches. After the end of the league stage, the top 8 teams in terms of points will directly advance to the round of 16 knockout stage, while the 16 teams ranked from 9 to 24 will need to draw lots to determine their opponents and play home and away playoff matches. The winner will advance to the round of 16. Unfortunately, the bottom 12 teams in the points ranking will be eliminated.

This new competition system replaces the traditional group stage system, not only increasing the number of matches, but also increasing the opportunities for super matches, which will undoubtedly greatly enhance the attention of the Champions League and achieve maximum benefits. At the same time, from a competitive perspective, the new competition system will make the competition more balanced and competitive.

At the UEFA Champions League draw ceremony, UEFA President Ceferin presented a special award to the all-time top scorer of the tournament, Cristiano Ronaldo, in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the world's most prestigious football tournament.
